Wow! What a story. Really sucks your pal broke his ankle, and souned like some serious overkill calling in a helocopter to get him to the hospital. Great write up, and great pictures. Beautiful scenery!!!!, looks like you had good weather too.

Just to explain, Cape Reinga is about 150 kms from anywhere, and that closest anywhere is Kaitaia, which is very vaguely somewhere...

Think the chopper came in to take him to the nearest xray station, Whangarei, some 3 hours drive from where we were, or a 30 minute helecopter trip.

Ahhh I see, a 30 min smooth flight vs a 3hr bounce down the road. Ok, putting it that way, the chopper doesn't seem as excessive.

You didn't say. . . but was your friend's crash on gravel? And what does "car destroying coarse metal track" mean. . . This does not compute in the USA!
