Default Upper Michigan Trails

Anyone live in the U.P. That can provide info on trail conditions? I would like to get up there the weekend of the 21st and do some riding around Covington (Barraga Plains) and possibly Norway. I have only ridden the state trails but hear I am missing out on some good mining roads and logging roads. Need some local knowledge, the riding in northern Wisconsin has gone down hill since the national Forest has closed so many roads to ohv travel. I will gladly drive the extra couple hours to Michigan as they are very off road friendly.

Thanks,
Brian

I'm originally from the U.P. and moved to wisconsin. I go back home about 3-4 times every year. You may not know this but depending on how you drive there, 141 in Niagra WI which takes you to iron mountain and norway area is closed for a new bridge install. Their is something like a 29 mile detour. I have never rode in that part of the U.P. as I'm from the Ishpeming area.

Thanks, I was planning on 141 as it runs right to Covington. The U.P. Is an off road friendly place, I live in West Bend and used to ride every summer in the Wabeno area. My son and I did a week of dirt biking and hit Barraga Plains(Covington) Bass Lake (Gwinn) and Two Hearted (N. Of Newberry). We had a great time camping and did not see any other bikes the whole week. Michigan does a great job of maintaining their trail systems. We hope to do two or three trips this summer.

If you go further..... the keweenaw has TONS of trails that criss cross it. Start in Calumet and go to Gay. Fun...

I have been riding in gwinn but not since like 1995. Have you ever taken a ride out to the old K.I. Sawyer AFB in Gwinn. When it closed you use to be able to ride anywhere on the base and my friends and I would go on the old humvee trails. My sister works at the base now which has been converted to the county airport now. I should ask her if you can still ride on those trails. I'll be up there on memorial day.

You can take a yooper out of the u.p. but you can't take the u.p. out of a yooper.

I love the Yooper tourist trap! The Keweenaw is beautiful, I have been keeping to the state trails but it sounds like I need to venture to the double tracks that criss cross the countryside. I will be sure to bring the gps as I have no local knowledge. I grew up riding in the Black Hills S.D. Back when national Forrest was not on lockdown. Was right out my back door, would ride all day as an 11 year old. I would end up in Wyoming on my XR75 and would head back when I got to half a tank. I would freak if I found out my own kids were doing something similar now a days.

Isn't that funny? When we were kids 12-13 we used to take off in the morning on our bmx bikes and ride into the city, and be gone all day, getting home in time for dinner. I wouldn't let my kids do that now a days.

I'm going up to Wabeno for the first time in June for the "ride for research" dual sport ride. I have had quite a few people tell me its a good time. Have you done that one, or the fall ride they do?

You should check on ADV , I know there is a UP thread, or two, in the central forum. ADV is good for the local stuff KF is good for KLX stuff
