Can't believe I missed this till now..ha!

I agree why limit yourself on bikes if you can afford/secure them? I own 4 and 1 car.

94 GSXR1100, 05 GSXR1000, 07 KLX250s, and a project zombie bike..Let's call it a GSXR1100 as well and ignore the 4 other bikes I've chopped away at to convert it into a street fighter

More bikes the better!

If I rode street 95% of the time I'd go with a street bike and while the 250 can get you a speeding ticket it's pretty rung out at those speeds a larger SM or a sport bike would be my weapon of choice.

But if the speed limit is even as low as 60 mph on a given route to work, the snappy acceleration of a 50, 70, or 100 horsepower bike that isn't in the piggy, Gold Wing weight category is just a hoot compared to the utilitarian power delivery of the KLX on pavement. No one is suggesting that folks can't use whatever bike they prefer for their transportation needs or desires as long as they're safe enough to run with other traffic reasonably. However, I think most folks would enjoy a much snappier power package for pavement and highway than what the KLX offers. I'm even looking at the new ZX300R as a fun, pavement playbike. The thing cranks out just short of 40 horsepower now and has received many upgrades to the frame and suspension. It absolutely kills the new Honda CBR250R. Of course we're just talking about small engine packaged bikes here.
The KLX sure isn't the snappiest bike on the block, but it's no scooter. As I said earlier, there are lots of bikes and vehicles out there with horsepower to spare, I was just responding to something the OP said;

I'm plenty comfortable on my KLX on the highway, and I don't hate it.

Yeah same here, i commute on the highway on the daily 15+ miles at 75+ mph. Feels really solid on the ground at those speeds even with 50/50 tires. I don't have a windscreen but I highly recommend a pair of bark buster because they helped greatly reduce the amount of wobble from the handlebars caused by the winds on the highway.

She's definitely no cruiser, but she can handle the highway no problem once you get her uncorked.

My speedo is corrected to the 10th, and I run @7k RPM at 70 MPH, with a 13T up front.

Are you talking about an SF, maybe? Maybe you have a 12T up front???

I'm 5'11" and around 175lbs, and I have no problem gaining speed in 5th gear going up what we in UT call mountains (you folks from TN call them "holy crap, that's steep!") Of course, I'm jetted for this altitude too. I live at 5,000 ft. but often ride up to 12,000 ft.

???

Maybe I should start another thread rather than muck this one up...

2007 klx250s, 42t rear, 14t front, 4.60-18 goldenboy on the rear w 1/3 tread left.

I guess I will do some number crunching and testing this weekend to see what the heck my bike is smoking...

As others have pointed out, a KLX250 vs a CBR600 is a little like a mountain bike vs a road bike: totally different tool for different applications.

If you are keeping highway trips to a minimum, the KLX will a better all around bike IMO. Sport bikes are not that great around town due to their tall gearing & tucked riding position. Not to mention, the CBR will be terrible off road!

hmmm...gearingcommander.com says you should be 65mph with stock tires.

I checked my tire height and did the calcs (and verified with GC). I should be @ 65MPH/7000RPM.

The numbers may not matter but there seems to be a lot of variation with MPG and MPH numbers.

Oh well...To the OP...Get the KLX!

My 300R is geared at 14/45 and my Trailtech vapor has been set to match GPS speeds.

I'm seeing right at 6700 rpm at 60mph.

IIRC, 14/45 should be about the same as 13/42. So why the difference? Is there an internal gearing diff between the 300R and the 250 S/SF?
