you know any local welder could probably fab up something for you easily
it uses stock body mount holes, some steel you can find easily at any metal supply yard
and you could even bend the tuning by hand in a vise using a torch to heat it up

just offer a welder $100 to make something simple

years ago on my old drz400 I made my own rear rack using a cheap harbor freight welder
and turned out really nice
but never thought of making the side racks

Yeah-but for $85 (plus shipping) PMR could just send me one. If it fits. And I don't see why it wouldn't.

In a way it's not just for me but for all the other 1st Gen owners who are looking for side racks for their bikes (all dozen or so of us) and gnashing their teeth that nobody (well, maybe Cycle Racks) advertises a rack that fits an older gen bike. They're all for 2009 and later. And I suspect that the subframes are the same and that it's no issue at all to put an 09 rack on an 07. If that's so, and it can be verified, then the world of racks for the old gen bikes is now wide open.

Edit: And that Cycle Racks unit is a monster and doesn't look like it would work well with soft saddlebags. And it's $200.

Guido,
I left a reply for you over on ADV. There are some slight differences between 06/07 and 09+ subframes. Hopefully the pics answer your questions....

im assuming the plastics use bolts like the newer bikes

I dont know why you couldnt buy a set of rear plastics and use those bolt locations for the rack

the front uses the seat bolt
so the rear sides would use the other bolt points, I would think

you would just need the frame to find the thread sizes and bolt length
but thats something anyone could provide the lengths

Okay, I think we're getting some resolution here. Thanks for those pics EyeDee.

More than likely the thing to do is talk to the fellow at PMR and see if he'll send me some racks and then take them back in return if they don't fit. I don't even need them till June anyway so it's not a pressing issue. Still it would be a good data point to have.

I sent my old rack to PMR so he would have a template. I'll vouch for the cycle rack. Yeah, it is $200, and it is big, and it doesnt work too well with passenger pegs, blah blah. But, it provides rear crash protection to complement my acerbis up front. It provides great pick up points for when you crash. I fall down a lot. You can load up er up and not worry about space. I ride all kinds of stuff, street, gravel, two track, some single. It hasnt gotten in my way yet. I also found a set of used cycle rack saddle bags and top case. I have all the capacity I will ever need.

funny, I just put these on today...will be installing the proper straps going across the seat in the near future. Got tired of waiting for spring so I thought I'd test out the rolie bags on the racks. Just a rough installation, bags weren't full and don't have all the strap kits yet, but it gives me something to look forward too.
