Finally got my 17 " Excel rims, here is the back one fitted. It came with disc and 39 tooth sprocket but the chain was too long so I put the 42 on. At 100 kph (around 60 mph) it was reving approx 400 rpm more than stock, seemed to have more acceleration in top gear too. I'll try the front when I have more time

Hey MaverickAus that looks good I would Love to to that to mine some day. Did you have to relace the wheels or did you get a complete wheel?
I guess if we could order from kal a D Tracker set of rims and spokes it would fit our hub. I'm not up on the other non US models so I don't no . My dealer would be lost to I asked them about doing the rims and they just kinda looked at me []

 

Looks great Garry - where did you say you got those? Lots of folks have talked about doing that, but I've only seen yours and maybe one other bike that actually had them on - looks great and I bet that's a great setup for the road and even probably works OK on hard-pack dirt. Is the front the same size?

i agree with you guys.. it does look good, but i dont understand the reason for putting em on besides the look... this bike is a dirtbike first and street bike last (by far) whats the point of putting a 90% street tire/rim on it?

Bad Bear I got them complete from eBay with sprocket and discs (although front disc is missing, I'm chasing that up) off a D-Tracker (Kawasaki made supermoto version of the KLX250). So yes it was complete just take out the 18" and bolt in the 17" assuming sprockets are the same.

Thanks Brian, yeah got them off aus eBay, both are 17" I'll take some pix of front when I get a chance. I rode it to work today and so far so good, the acceleration in top gear has improved as the wheel / tyre setup is smaller than standard there lowering the gearing slightly (400 rpm more at 60mph).

jsac, that is a very good question. My reasons for putting them on are

1. My usage of the bike is approx 90% commute / 10% off road
2. Having the 17" on the back means the seat is lowered a bit without resorting to dropping the suspension and therefore losing travel.
3. Seeing as I use the bike 90% road the road tyres will grip better (safer) and I think they will last longer than the all terrain type tyre. As my Dunlop 603 is almost stuffed in only 2500 km of riding I will now fit a more aggressive off road tyre to the standard rim for dirt riding.
4. Seeing as the rims came off a KLX (D-Tracker) they slip on and off with little effort.
5. Yep your right ... looks, the supermoto setup looks cool. Looks were the last consideration of mine tho, function and practicality is far more important to me

And not to mention that a supermoto setup is basically dirt bike basis w/suspension adjustments, primarily asphalt tires, and aerodynamics designed for higher speed, i.e., that front fender for stability. Supermoto tracks are typically 75% asphalt, 25% dirt. Those tires should do fine in dry hardpack - just wouldn't want to get into the mud.

 

why not buy a motard then instead of the extensive changes to this bike? [&:]

 

because the D-Tracker isn't available in Australia, and the D-Tracker wouldn't do what I wan't when I go trail riding. This way I have the best of both worlds
