Default Starter switch inconsistent

After changing the handle bars, the starter doesn't always connect while in gear. I have to pull the clutch lever a couple of times then it usually works. It works fine in neutral. Anyone have a similar problem?

Sounds as though something is haywire with the clutch switch. I've done the clutch and sidestand switch delete. Parts that aren't there can't cause problems.

You can put a jumper wire in the clutch switch, rendering it 'ineffective'. One of the first things I did to my 'new to me' 2009 SF.

I started having a problem with mine while trying to start it in gear. Mine got to where if I pulled the clutch in too far the switch wouldn't work. It had a sweet spot. I recently removed it altogether.

Mine is the same way Tom. Also it resets the trip meters and the clock. Whats up with that.

Check all your ground connections.

Thanks; never thought of a ground problem. I cleaned the battery ground and it works fine. But then they most always work in the shop.

+1 Usually I see this after I've pulled it out of a mudhole or recovered it from the shrubbery, so I'm just happy that it starts at all. So far, I've just bumped it back into neutral, waited for the water to drain from the airbox, and she's always fired. If all I have to do is pop it into neutral, then I'll take it!
