Default Speedometer cable question.

I have a quick question about the speedometer cable on my KLX (2007). I was removing my front fender and in order to do that i had to disconnect the speedometer cable because of the black bracket on the fender that holds it in place. I removed the black screw and unplugged the cable and I noticed a black substance on the plug (I'm assuming it's oil). I was wondering do I need to worry about replacing any of this stuff or dirt or anything getting in there? After I reconnected it and put the screw back in I spun the front wheel and the speedometer seemed to work just fine.

You should but it'll work fine if you don't. It's grease though not oil. I think the idea is to keep water out of there.

So just apply some regular grease that comes in the tube to the cable and the part where it goes in? (Sorry, don't know much about this stuff yet )

Yep, you got it bud. Make sure it's waterproof grease.
