Default Speedo Assembly squeal...

Hey all,

So my new 09's got a nasty squeal coming from what seems to be the speedomter assembly down at the front wheel. At first I thought it was the front brake, but there's no difference in sound no matter how I apply the brakes...and it's definitely coming from the right side...

Since the bike's still under warranty, should I just take it in to the Kawi dealer? Or is it simple enough that I could pull the wheel off and investigate the problem myself? I'm at about 750 km on the odometer now, so I'm just about due for my 1st service...

Any opinions out there?

If you're gonna let the dealer do the 1st service, that's a good time to let them fix the squeal. But, I can't see spending $600 on the first service or whatever rediculous price they are charging for a glorified oil change. Do check that every bolt is tight though. Mine had a loose Shift lever bolt, loose lower chain guide bolts and the seat and rear light cover were not installed correctly.

Thanks for the reply.

My dealer's been pretty good so far. They're going to give me a break (maybe 20%) off parts and labour, so I don't feel like I'll be getting TOO ripped off.

I found out the hard way about loose bolts, though! I dumped the KLX into a snowbank last week while coming down a somewhat snowy and slippery logging road. When I dug the bike out, I found that the handlebars had been pushed back about 3 inches! They were so loose it was a wonder something more catastrophic hadn't happened before...Moral of the story? I checked the bike again for loose bolts right then and there! Woohoo for extra tools! The stock kit is garbage...Looks like they were stamped out of pop cans!

As far as the speedo squeal goes, I threw a shot of WD 40 in there and now the noise is gone...The dealer said they'll check it out when I bring it in.

I have the same squeel on my '09... from about 45km/h right down to about 5km/h...

I'll try some lube in the sensor thing at the wheel. I also had the same problem with my handlebars!! i was riding in some rough terrain... the bars moved down when i was doing about 35 km/h... almost lost it... i too tightened every bolt i could find after that one!!

cheers!

I had the same thing on my wifes 09. All it took was to spray some wd40 on the speedo drive on the front wheel. And it went away with time...
