Spacers for KX forks
#11
I read my own post above and I left out a detail. When I said the CR/YZ and KX forks were the same - I think that means the internals are the same. I believe the axle lugs, etc would be different in order to accomodate different axles, etc on the different make forks.

I removed the base valves today and thought I'd record the stock shimstack in case someone else needs the info for future reference. I know it's stock because the nut was still peened onto the threaded shaft of the base valve.
starting with the largest 1st:
(4) @ 22 - .1 I dropped to 3
xxxxxxxxxxxxx I added a 14 - .1 here as a crossover shim (see below)
(2) @ 20 - .1 I dropped to 1
(1) @ 18 - .1 kept
(1) @ 16 - .1 kept
(2) @ 14 - .1 I took one of these and used as a crossover above
(1) @ 11 - .25 (clamp) kept
(2) @ 18 - .5 (spacers) kept
Without changing the clicker settings, and just cycling the forks by hand - the forks are noticeably faster in compression and have way more rebound damping. The shims were in pristine condition for 17 year old forks. I resurfaced the valves even though they prolly didn't need it.
The compression valve looks like it flows at least as much oil as the goldvalves I put in the 250S stock forks. The 95 KX forks do, in fact, have a checkplate for a midvalve and the spring is fairly light. I still need to change the springs and oil - really grungy.
I'll play with these a bit and report back.... in May that is. 2 feet of snow and counting here in Maine.

Interesting to see how you like your results from the shim tweaking. I notice in some of the earlier USD forks that the mid-valve setup is often removed by some, but I certainly don't claim to be an expert in this area.

I talked to John (I think) at Moto-Pro about that. He said the midvalve conversion kit they sell is to take an actual midvalve shimstack and turn it back into a checkplate (as seen on the 95 KYBs) as that setup works best for most KYBs from 91 on up.
Truth is, the 95 shimstack looked fairly plush as it comes stock. Soon thereafter they went up to 10 of the larger shims to stiffen them up for MX. I'm guessing that's why Brewster and some others were able to use the 95's with no changes to the stack at all..
