If I was to guess, I'll wager the shifting forks broke off inside the case. Seems more likely than shearing the gears, if the gears sheared, you could rotate them to the good teeth, then hit the broken off ones, it would sound terrible.

The shifting just means that you are getting the shift drum to spin. Time to take the right side cover off and see if power is making it to the input shaft.
If you put the bike in gear. With engine off. Can you spin the sprocket freely?
It is much easier to fix something under the right sidecover than to split the cases for internal tranny stuff. Most of the things that can pop are under the right cover.

Towing to you :- $50 cash,
