smog system removal
But yeah, all small engine 4 strokes backfire. And I don't mean through the carb backfire, I mean out the exhaust. Machines with no air injection and a loud can you can hear it constantly. Like our KX- F, CR- F, YZ- F, cousins. They are suppose to backfire, its when they do it loudly is it a problem. Like the stock can on these things is so quiet you don't hear it. But if you do then you most likely have a problem. But now, if you have an aftermarket can and the air injection removed and you heard it thats a different story.
What happens is your going at a higher rate of speed with more throttle and then all of the sudden you let it go but the motor is still revving high. That blows the unburned gasoline out of the exhaust port and then is lit on fire in the pipe and it makes a small explosion. Its normal, and its suppose to happen.

ok..... terminology here..... that is Afterfire, not backfire... two different things.... I have herd mind afterfire before, on the highway. Backfire is bad, that usually means bad timing....
Kinda the same thing, take my dads 73 454 chevy, mechanical fuel pump.... while going down the road turn the key off, fuel pump keeps pumpin fuel, only like a few seconds, then turn the key back on.... flames out the tail pipe......lol....

Well even if removing the hoses isn't exhaust temp related and won't help in that aspect, I think its still worth it just to get rid of those hoses.

Interesting....after being around engines and stuff my whole life and mechanics and so forth...even professional ones. I've never heard the two distinct terms backfire and afterfire. It makes sense, just never heard of it. Everybody just says backfire and its assumed from the pipe, and if its through the carb you just say backfired through the carb. Kinda like how people say alloy wheels on a car, they are referring to aluminum wheels but the true definition of alloy is just simply a mixture of metals so it could be anything. But even if you know the truth you have to say alloy and knowingly be wrong just so people can understand ya. The dumbing of America...so......I see where your coming from

"I've never heard of that", or "I've never heard it called that", or "I've never seen it done that way", or his classic- "makes sense", or......................."Yeah, I agree with you, just accept me".........

Ive seen my dads truck backfire with the hood up and air cleaner off, flames went around and over the hood...pretty cool.... my dad lost some hair that day...lol....
Ive been around my dad my whole life obviously, he is the best mechanic i have ever seen... and the apple didnt fall far from the tree.... He used to drag race his 69 nova with a 350 and beat camaros all day long with 400's... All the basic prinicipals transfer over to bikes from cars... most... and im new to bikes... so i was just trying to understand, and thinking of the people who cut the backfire screen. out....

Well I'm talking about "afterfire" then. All 4 stroke bikes afterfire. Theres little to muffle the backfire so if one backfires I'm sure we'd hear it. This is actually one of the few 4 strokes with a backfire screen so it musn't be that big of a deal.
When I said about the cars I was talking about I thought you meant new cars with all their technology on them. Who knows what all systems they have.

yea i was curious exactly what ya meant... and im sure newer cars dont do either.... too many sensors and emission crap... any unburned gasses get burnt in the cat... and with the o2 sensors before and after cats now.... theres little to know unburned gas in exhaust, in newer cars. they are probably exactly stoich (14:1), you have herd that before right?
25 years ago, pre 1983, also pre fuel injection any and every car put out more emissions at idle than these bikes do at full throttle. now a days with the aide of computer controlled spark, fuel injection, and on the fly variable timing adjustments My Dodge ram I would bet runs about 95% efficient, or better. It is a 2005 quad cab and when I was working in the GM dealership in the late 90's we were seeing those kind of efficientcy numbers when putting a vehicle on a 4 gas analyzer.
thanks on the education in the differences between the air injection and EGR. I assumed the fitting on the front of the block was where the recycled gases came from and they were dumping them in the air box, which sounds alot like how egr works.
Got new handle bars in today. Going to be different and replaced my black Marshall bars with a set of Fly Racing KX high bends in suzuki Yellow.
My bike is put away for the rest of the year. Had a close call last Friday riding to work in the morning. It was dark and early, chick ran stop stop sign. I missed t-boning her at 45mph by inches...
Time to play with it a little and see what I can do to make run a little better. Honestly, I am thinking about going back to stock carb with dyno jet kit. Need the cash flow.
Jason,
i will send you the pics of my pumper tonight.
