I've never heard of doing the float check with the bike running.

I just bought a new float needle ..no harm in having a spare or maybe it will fix the issue.

how bad is it that the carb didn't have a o-ring? it doesn't leak but I noticed there wasn't an o-ring the first time I took the carb apart.

You say you smell fuel when parked. A missing o-ring could be the culprit.
Which one is missing?

float bowl gasket I believe its called. just that square shaped o ring that goes around the edge where the float bowl touches the carb.

could be the reason..
but I believe most of the gas is because
1) I may do a wheelie, drive through a park with rumble road, or do a power slide (and dip the bike low) ...causing gas to get into the tank overflow tubes (which sometimes forget to unplug since I plug them up after letting bike air out to limit smell in my garage)

2) prob something wrong with the float needle getting tiny small drips from the float bowl ..

3) maybe excess fuel in the carb (throttle port?) or whatever its called ..because Im a newb idk...

I vote float bowl gasket missing. Seeps out there. Gas can easily seep between those two metal surfaces without any gasket to stop it.
