Mine suddenly died at a stop sign yesterday while in 1st gear, clutch pulled in (out in the middle of nowhere on a 100+ degree day). Turns out the clutch cable adjustment had worked loose during the ride. Minor cardiac event at first until I realized what it was.

Hope yours turns out to be as simple.

Let's all hope it did not seize. Like stated above the more experienced people ( cousin larry, tnc, dan888 just to name a few ) here will need more info. Not me of course, I'm still learning.

Running the engine under a heavy load (sand) and not having much forward movement could create more heat than the radiators could dissipate causing the piston to expand and seize against the cylinder wall............I've done that with a small buggy powered by a 350 Honda street motor.

If that's the problem, you may get by with getting the cylinder cleaned up and a new piston and rings.

Ride on

Could be time to go big bore. Is there any oil in the engine?

It's not as hard as you think really. You just have to follow directions and heed the advice of this forum is all. Take the covers off the crank case and try to turn the engine by hand.

Next time ditch the regular coolant and spend the money on some Engine Ice. The top end is pretty easy to do. Get a torque wrench. Look at the top of this forum. There's a shop manual for a 2009 on a PDF file you can download. The top ends are basically the same as the earlier models.

Ouch!...couldn't budge the kickstart? That doesn't sound like a small problem unfortunately. A kickstart...what bike do you have here?
