I've lost chains on off roaders twice and a streetbike once. When the chain broke, it was basically spit off and stuck on the back sprocket area. when the wheel cocked and the chain derailed it wadded up at the front, sticking between the sprocket and case with damage due to the shock to the crankshaft. When the masterlink went bye-bye (early on when I didn't have a brain about bikes) the chain broke the crankcase and side cover in front of the sprocket and spit off the chain.

In no case did it come near hitting my foot. The only thing I heard where anyone had any problem was when my friend had his bell bottom jean pant leg suck in to the countershaft sprocket of his Bultaco, which chewed up the jeans and yanked his foot against the case. 70s Buls had the area open enough for that to happen.

I agree with what others say, make sure the steel chain guide is in place to keep the chain from breaking cases if it should come off. The actual cover isn't any big deal. We ran without them on the 70s TM Suzukis because mud could build up inside the covers.

What I have on now is a first try that I haven't gotten around to doing a second try on . I would like to make something a little nicer out of solid aluminum. This one is a stack of .125 thick pieces pinned together into a solid piece.

not much room with the 15t front...the stock actually sits mm away from the center of the chain....can't even go in if it was on the bolts before putting iit on...
