replacement head ?

Not sure if polishing them will work. I can feel the damage with my finger nail.

But I really don't know much. First time into a motor.

Speaking from my order just a few weeks ago, "Head assembly" just means the head and cam retainer, they are a matched set.

gotcha. Guess it looks like this may cost $1000 just to get a new head, cams, and valves. FML

OK, what is the down side on putting it all back together and riding it? If it works you save $1000. The bearing surfaces look burnt, I would knock off all the high places, clean all the oil passages and put it back together. Put a lot of grease on that journal. Yours does not look too bad, the cam lobes & buckets were shot on that other post.
If your planning a trip across south america, put a rebuilt head on.

Need to get the valves replaced, Last valve reshim they were very close to the limit. So I would already be putting $300 into it just for that. Don't want to dump money into a bad head.

Got a line on another head locally but the guy is not sure if it is in good shape. Thinks he may have lost a valve. If cams are good I can get them cheap. May send the head to Bill with the cylinder and see what he thinks. Worst case I will just order a new head and cams and have it shipped directly to him to put together.

I'd run that head as is. I've seen worse and still worked fine.

As long as what you can feel with your fingernail is recessed and not above then I think its fine.

It appears to have eroded the edge. I would file that corner at a 45*,removing the stress riser. Then polish with a green scotch brite pad, lightly.Use plenty of assembly lube(I like moly grease).
