Rear suspension set up
Hey guys Just took my KLX 250 out for the first ride this afternoon! Gotta say this forum rocks! Just a quick question about the rear suspension. Will adjusting the rear spring preload bring the ride height down much or should I look for better alternatives?
Hey man welcome, I wonder if the lowering links would be better than adjusting the spring to a tension that is too springy. The lowering links have been discussed here to some extent. Again welcome and hopefully someone will get back to you soon. Me I am thinking about trying to raise the bike a little. Maybe I just need a new Dunlop 606 that will raise it at least an inch.
Yea id probably go with what deej said, try the lowering links... i think they are pretty cheap... but adjusting the preload so that there is less would work too.
I agree with Deej that the best approach for you would be lowering links. You can get them at a couple of different places, but I can personnally recommend Norm Kouba at www.koubalink.com. Many of us have had great customer service experiences with Kouba. If you decide to order from there, I suggest you pick up a T-handle air/fuel screw as well. It's like $15 or so and really makes adjusting your a/f ratio a no-brainer.
Thanks for all the replies guys! I'll check out the Kouba website and look into the links as I would like to lower the rear 2-3 in. Apparently the dealer told me there are links for the KLR 650 that drop it 3 in and appearantly fit the 250. Anyone heard of this?
Yeah, it depends upon your weight and riding style. But lowering links and dialing in the suspension is probably the way to go. Somebody on ebay is making them pretty cheap.
I have a set of the e-bay links. $20 shipped and they are finely machined aluminum. Marty who used to hang out here helped the e-bay seller determine the dimensions for them. I think he has 1, 1.5, 2, and maybe 2.5" lowering links. If you aren't sure where you want it you could get all of the e-bay sets and try them out for the same price as the Kouba links and then resell the others after you find the size you want.
