My KTM when I got it was a theft recovery.. theives ripped off the gas cap to fuel it up and go.. water eventually got in the tank.. and the engine.. ruined the rings.. I didn't know about the engine and rings part... When i checked it out, I drained the carb, put it fresh fuel, it fired right up for half the value of the bike, it was a good deal in my mind, even if there were deeper issues.

About 1000 miles later, I hear this crazy knocking sound... no idea what it is. Take it to the dealer that day while out on my ride, says probably just a timing chain and to change it soon. I ride to dinner (on the way home with same ride) noise gets note-ably louder in parking lot, but I figure what can I do, so I ride the rest of the way home ... until it quits. Stripped it down to find that two sides of my piston sheared off like someone took a chisel and smacked them off. Can't believe it was still running at all. Reason it ultimately stopped was that a chunk of ring or piston slapping around in the top of the cylinder closed the spark plug gap. It was running a little weak.. but still running. Amazing what these engines will take and still run sometimes!
