I just got Renthal bars for my 2009 KLX250S and am wondering what others are doing with the throttle control and signal control. Both controls have a small peg that fits into a hole in the stock bars. Are people drilling a hole in their new bars or are they removing the pegs. If they are removed will the controls stay in place, especially the throttle?

 

Remove pegs. I also do a couple wraps of electric tape for the controls to "bite" onto. They stay there pretty well.

 

So you don't have trouble with the controls turning on the bars or the throttle sliding off the end of the bars? The plastic control housings don't seem to clamp tightly to the bars.

 

I used a Dremel and put the notches in. Did not need to go all the way through the bars. I have Pro Tapers and they are very THICK.

I like mine to not bite in to much. I keep the screws snug, not locked in. That way when I biff, it lets stuff rotate a bit on the bars, instead of breaking.

 

Thanks for the info. My main concern with drilling into the bars is affecting the strength of the bars in the event of a crash.

 

Don't drill the bars. Cut the notches off. The controls tighten fine , even without the notches.

 

I ground the posts off.. I like the electrical tape idea, mide do twist a bit if I try..

Funny. In one of my first crashes the nub snapped off of the left hand controls. When I got my Pro Tapers I worried about busting the nub off. The throttle stays in place fine without it though.

 

Thanks everyone for the tips. Sounds like the thing to do is remove the nubs. I'd rather do that than drill into my new bars.
It's great seeing and hearing what others are doing to their KLX. I've got lots of projects in mind for my bike during our winter down time.
