Hello,

I am new to the forum and am about to purchase a 250s. One theme I keep seeing is people changing the air flow in/out. I understand the air intake and exhaust work and also the need to re-jet after this.

What I am wondering is, how do they run stock?

I don’t want to buy something I will have to sink a lot of money into right off the bat.

Thanks for any info.

Mine runs just fine. Mind you, if I were ever to make any changes I might be going "I should have done this sooner".

Just ride it as is for a while!

Even though I usually disliked most any of the bikes I've owned as delivered, they've all run and operated just fine. I've ridden a couple of bone stock KLX's from my old shop I used to work at. Knowing how much better a KLX "can" run is what makes me perceive the stock KLX to be somewhat "doggy" in the power department.

You're right, ol'klx...I could kick myself for not doing the TM36 pumper on my KLX 3 years ago.

I still have a stock setup. Been running fine for me for the past year. I don't ride with anyone and have never ridden another KLX250S, so I have nothing to compare to. I'll leave it as is. I like to sneak out of the house at 0'dark:30 so I plan on keeping the stock pipe. I've read that some of the mods will still help, but I have nothing pushing me to do them.

I ran mine for a while stock and loved it. Probably would have left it that way but winter came and I just couldn't help myself from some shop time...

It's a topic with no absolute right or wrong, but I think you'll find few who've modded their bikes successfully to some degree yearning for the bone stock KLX again. If the mods one does to their KLX adds more power, better usable power, and no irritating results, there's little logic to take a step back. I think some who have modded their bikes poorly may indeed want to go back. If your carb isn't jetted spot on, I can see wanting to ditch the DJ kit. If your exhaust is ear-splitting loud, then I can see a desire for the stock exhaust...or at least something quieter. If you installed a pumper carb and never got the jetting satisfactorily dialed in, I can see wanting to go back to a well running stock carb. If the mods destroyed your mileage to an unacceptable level, then by all means you'd probably want to go back to stock or close to it.

When you do all or part of the mods in a very spot-on manner, it's hard to find many folks who'd want to return to stock. Some of this may also have to do with one's background on past motorcycles...or the lack thereof. Having had full-on competition off road bikes, it was very hard for me to be satisfied with a bone stock KLX. Other people may not have a benchmark to make a comparison and are perfectly happy with the stock KLX. Also a person may have a KX450F as their off road bike and just bought the KLX to fill some kind of commuter/dirt road need and don't want or need to putz with the KLX. Like I said in my first sentence, there is no absolute correct/incorrect response here. You just have to make an honest assessment about your situation.
