Default Pilot jet & Air Fuel screw

I have a 38 pilot jet and the a/f screw is at 3.5 turns out.

It had been stalling off idle (like sitting at stoplights) at 2.5 turns out, w/ slight popping on deceleration.

The Kouba screw instructions say not to go any more turns out after 2.5 or it may fall out.

My question is should I increase pilot jet size after so many turns out (3.0 or more) on the a/f screw? Is there an ideal range to strive for on the a/f screw?

thanks Mike

Heres exactly how to set your fuel screw and know if your pilot jet is too small:

1.Turn you idle screw until your bike idles at like 1000 rpms.

2.Turn "IN" your fuel screw until your engine starts to starts to miss or run bad.

3.Then Turn "OUT" your fuel screw from that point and count how many turns it takes for the bike to miss again from being too rich.

4.Now that you counted, divide that number of turns by 2. And turn out your fuel screw that number.

5.Then close the fuel screw until fully seated and see how many turns that was. If it was more than 3, your pilot is lean..

Hope this helped you even a little,
Jamie

Thanks, it is a great help

I had read that info somewhere but I couldn't find it again. Just trying to remember where.

At 2.5 turns out it won't run, at 3.5+ it was ok.

I am lean on the pilot so I need to slap in a 40.

I'm running a #138 main #40 pilot. Works good for me. FS is 1.75 turns out.

Thanks for the info Oz and everyone else.

I put in the 40 pilot and it runs great. Idles sweet and revs well so far.

I set the a/f screw at 1.25 turns out. Still running the 128 main. Gotta do a test ride to see if it is in the ball park.

Hey westozklx, do you think putting in a #40 pilot jet will help with my mid range problem? I am going to order the kouba fuel screw too.. Sorry for the thread hi jack racegass :-)
