Default Phone/GPS Mounts... and USB Power?

What have you guys setup on the KLX?

I'm thinking of using a 12v DC USB adapter, and mounting it in the steer tube.. and just connecting it to the electrical system somewhere. I.E. run the wires out of the bottom of the steer, and onto the frame, to the closest 12v circuit.

Then using this to put my phone in...

Then if I don't want it on the bike for a short ride.. it will still look clean and tidy with no extra wires to worry about.

I'm at a loss when it comes to electrical stuff in vehicles... I know USB is 5v, so it needs the voltage dropped down... but can anyone tell me where to wire such adapter to? I need to find a 12v circuit, should I just break out the multimeter and measure different wires?

Do any of you guys have setups similar to what I'm trying to achieve?

I have a tusk 12volt power socket for my bike.
Tusk 12 Volt Power Socket | ATV | Rocky Mountain ATV/MC

Connects right to the battery with built-in fuse & has a handlebar mount. The only problem was I had to add some lenght to the wires, but easily done. Then I just bought a 12v charge for my cell phone. I got both items off ebay for under $40 dollars if I remember correctly. Haven't bought a mount for my phone yet though.

Oh I like that one, the fuse is nice, and the cover in case it rains.

Handlebar mount sounds better... I went outside and looked at the steerer tube of my bike.. looks like it's too narrow to fit a 12v adapter...

Accesory power was my first mod on my 09 klx250sf. Pretty simple, mount to battery ran the wire up the left side of the frame, but just like Mikey 13 I ran short of wire and had to but an extension, which happens to be like 8 feet long! I cant remember the exact name of the outlet plug style but a easy comparison would be the basic concept of having a "trickle charger plug in connection" handy without having to get to the battery. This is done all the time on cycles, atvs, etc. Anyway thats all you need, except most of those (if not all) only have a short line since the manufacturer is designing it just to get the wire plug accessable but isn't expecting it to have to go all the way to the handlebars, so I went to a Batteries plus store and got an extension.
To convert to usb is simple, just get a cigarette style plug in for your power line plug, then add a cigarette to usb plug in convertor. They are quite common and super cheap.

I have a 12v straight to the battery with a 25 amp fuse. That way I can charge the battery right through the socket. Works perfect. Also same setup on the wife's bike.

You will NEED some sort of voltage regulator if you're wiring it directly to 12v and wanting to get 5v out. You could rip apart a cigarette lighter adapter and wire direct to the circuit board.

I connected a battery tender pigtail to my battery for charging. Then, I bought a 12v Female cigarette adapter that plugs into the pigtail. I'm using a cigarette to USB adapter for USB devices. Gives me more options that way...

Wire a 12 socket to the battery and then use the right chargers for the accessory.

The USB adapter I linked to runs directly on 12v, so no need to do any regulating.. just rig it up and solder wires to the leads.

But I like the adapter that Mikey linked to, easier.
