i have some ufo rap around hand guards that have worked quite well for the past 2 years but a couple of months ago i wend down hard on my clutch side and flattened the guard like a pancake. lol, but my lever is fine.

 

The bar end plugs actually do work. Even high end road bicycles often have bar end inserts to dampen vibration, and they really work. But notice that I said "road bicycles". You'd have to ride for lengthy periods on smooth pavement to really feel much benefit. This an old but effective method.
I have aftermarket bars with no plugs and full-on Acerbis wrap-around bash guards. This is more of a dirt bike to me than a road cruiser, so I don't care.

Just like some leave their clutch/brake perches lightly snugged to the handlebar so they will spin in a hard impact, I do the same with my bash guards...decently tight, but just enough to move a bit. I've never broken a lever or clutch/brake perch with this method over years of enduro racing and trail riding. This also saves a bent handlebar occasionally too.
