So when did the single rear mono shock become prevalent in dirt bikes? Those old bikes look, well, odd with two rear shocks. Who was the first major bike maker to switch, and what bike?

I think Yamaha had the first mono shock in the YZ. It came out around 1980.

Yeah Yamaha started it in the 80's monoshocks on production bikes. I owned the first mass produced road bike with a monoshock the mighty GPZ550. What a great bike. [8D]

yeah remember when all the japanese bikes had their respective mono shock names on their swingarms in the eighties am i really old or what, i still remember the maicos too and im only 33. honda had PRO-LINK, suzuki had the FULLFLOATER, yamaha had the MONOCROSS and kawi has the UNI-TRAK. i have some old school UNI-TRACK swingarm stickers and ill be slapping them on my bike monday, just so i dont forget the 1980s haha.

OH yes Maicos,I had a 1980 440 that i picked up in 84 rode that bike until 91 when i replaced it with a Honda 91 xr600R,The honda just was not the same by far i miss that old power house what a lot of fun. Lots happier with the new KLX than i ever was with that Honda, Maico that word sure brings back some memories.
