Question Oil cooler mod.

Picked up an oil cooler from a mate , gratis. I think it's VFR 800, fits around the headstock, could be the same as XR400. Anyway, anyone out there have any pictures (close ups would be nice) of a D tracker race bike fitted with an oil cooler mod. I hear they are a popular mod in Japan. (Tremor38) We get a fair bit of heat out here in the summer and I'm sure the extra 500cc of good oil will help as I'm planning on some long Safari sessions soon (Fire trails at 100km+ for at least a few hours. Extended high speed running. .)

Similar to this type.

ENZED will hook me up with the new fittings I require for a sound $60 AUS.

So does this work like a heat-sink? What benefits will you get out of it?

extracts heat from oil which in effect provides a overall cooler running, better performing engine. Not really needed unless your running in hot weather for pro longed periods.

Here is the parts that are used on the D-Tracker. They use a special plate over the oil pump to route the oil through the cooler. I am thinking about using the oil pipe to do the same thing.

I was hoping to tap into the existing "solid 3 way" oil line we already have. I just needed to figure out the flow of oil. Is it from the pump (left side below the clutch cable) up to the head, or the other way around?

Can't seem to think of any problems with this approach as long as the feed from the cooler goes to the head and the inlet at the rear of the crankcase.
Clear as mud but you get the idea.

Thanks for the Nasert link, but $600+ AUS for an oil cooler is taking the ****.

The flow is from the pump up to the head, as far as I can tell from the diagram in the manual. I was going to tap the hard pipe coming from the pump, send it to the cooler, and then send it back to the pipe going up to the head. Only problem would be the oil level in the case unless I hang the oil cooler lower than the pipe tapping points. I was amazed at the cost too, that is ridiculous!

Looks from the Nasert pictures that the cooler is at the same level as the cylinder. It should be an easy mod to keep the cooler I have sourced at the same level.

Feed from the pump to the cooler then a two way banjo from the cooler with separate feeds to the rear of the crankcase an the cylinder head. All in "bling bling" stainless lines with anodized red banjo fittings and stainless bolts. Should look "fully sick bro!"

The idea of the engine having 30% more oil capacity is reassuring given the plans I have of some long trips here in the west.

Let me know when you get it together, and where you get the parts. I already have a cooler, just need fittings.
