Default Octopus/Jellyfish Vent Hoses on Gas Tank...

These hoses annoy the crap out of me. As many times as Ive removed the tank to play with the carb, these hoses are what Ive come to dread most. The tank looks like a Portugese Man O' War with these things hanging off of it when you pull the tank.

Is there really any reason these hoses need to be 3 feet long and hang underneath the bike? Under what conditions would gasoline ever come out of them?? Tank failure of some sort?

Im really tempted to remove them completely to simplify pulling the tank and reduce clutter around the carb and rear shock, etc.
