Default Not all 2009 models are CA compliant..

I bought a 2009 KLX250s in NV a couple weeks ago. I went to DMV in CA to get it registered and they said I need a VIN Verification to verify the vins and make sure it meets CARB rules, I thought no problem its an 09, and made an appointment to get it done. When I got home I started looking for the sticker that says its CA compliant, I couldn't find one and it made me nervous. I called Kawasaki and he ran the VIN, he said it is a 49 state bike. Now to figure out how to make this work.

I don't recall ever seeing the '09 models being 49-state. My 2012 is 50-state. How many miles are on the bike?

I looked on the bike for a sticker that said complies with California BS but couldn't find one. The bike also didn't have the canister and hoses on the front left like other CA bikes, I didn't think to question it since it's an 09. After not being able to find the sticker I called Kawasaki and gave them the vin, Kawasaki confirmed it's a 49 state bike.

It has 1460 miles on it right now.

Where is the sticker suposed to be on these bikes saying they are CA compliant?

Yes there are 2 versions, one California (50) state legal and the 49 state legal, no charcoal canister.

It's under either the left or right plastic side cover/number plate.

I replaced all the red for black plastic, made two trips to the dmv for that sticker to be confirmed.

Man that sucks! I think it needs 7,500 miles on it in order to register a 49-state bike in CA.

I assume you've already read over the regulations here.

Do any of the exemptions apply?

I have looked at that, I don't qualify for any of the exemptions. The guy I bought it from is going to be moving to CA from NV, I spoke with him about him registering it in CA then "sell it to me". After talking to a lady at DMV about doing that, it sounds like even that is a hassle and could take up to 60 days for DMV and CARB to research it and process the request.

Anyone in the other 49 states interested in a 2009 KKX250S with low (1480) miles and in good condition?

Hook a drill up to the speedo and let it run for the weekend if it takes 7600 miles.
