Default Newbie! Best chain?

I did a search and didn't come up with much. I have an 07 KLX 250S it only has 173 miles on it but has been sitting. I rebuilt the carb changed the oil and new inner tubes. Now I have tried lubing the chain but can't get some of the kinks out. What would be the best chain to buy? I am not made of money and would like the best balance. I have read the x-ring is good but too confused. I am an old school biker and am used to oiling chains. Any help would be gratefully received.

With only a 173 miles don't you think maybe putting on a couple hundred might straighten it out? As long as there isn't corrosion I would think it's still a good chain. Have you cleaned it with solvent?

Default I was hoping!

I was hoping a few miles would straighten it out! I have put 13 on it! What solvent would you suggest or does the stock chain not have seals! I am not familiar with o-ring chains! It runs great, just don't want to mess anything up with running a bad chain!

Default Just chain lube so far!

Just chain lube. I am thinking of taking it off and soaking it over night in some motor oil like I used to do for my Triumph. Is the stock chain o-ring? Or will soaking it have no effect? Thanks for the help guys. Just a newbie to dirt bikes and new fangled bike parts.

I use chain solvent followed by a rinse and then chain lube. You might want to get a chain brush too if you don't have one.

I'd recommend seeing if you can get the chain to loosen up a bit with a few miles and some kerosene. At only 173 miles, that chain is brand new!

Failing that, I actually ran an old-school non-o-ring chain on my KLX with surprisingly good results, documented here:https://www.kawasakiforums.com/forum...re-tips-38710/

On a relatively low HP bike like the KLX, I got pretty decent life out of a standard chain with routine care using kerosene to clean & gear oil to lube. The advantages are lower cost & less rolling friction.

Default Awesome thanks guys!

I just didn't want to hurt the gears. Sounds like that isn't a problem. I will try to work the kinks out. I was truly blessed with getting this bike. It's beautiful just traded some work for it. Problem is now I can't wait to thrash it.

Or camp fuel. Close to the same stuff.

Default I am going to take it off and go through it!

I am going to take it off and go through it! Thanks for all the help guys. I wasn't sure that it could be oiled as I was thinking it was an o ring chain. But cool I shall treat like my old Triumph chain! Thanks again. By the way if I do have to replace it what chains do you guys recommend?

x2 on the kerosene or diesel fuel. I would go with an o'ring or x'ring chain. A chain will last as long as you are good at lubing it. Thats the key to long life to a chain. You can buy the best chain out there but if you dont keep up on maintenance on it, it wont last long.
