RE: New girl
Hi Julia,
nice to see you here the ADV forums are excellent but we have heaps more info here for the KLX250. Great first ride report and pix you have a good eye for colours. I used a mixture of the reccomened break in and my own judgement. I varied the revs a bit generally sticking to the limits set by Kawasaki. I also changed my oil very early in the process and change it often. Also keep your air filter clean as any dirt and crap in the intake can close up the valves quickly.
The seat is not great for distance riding you may get some tips from Brain's (nobrakes) post. Also this may of benefit to you ADV members get 10% discount.
The KLX is a great bike and I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as the rest of us [8D]
Cheers

QPD,
Welcome to the board for KLX250's. The best place around to find out info about your new acquisition!
4000 rpm's? Oh, for about the first 100 miles!
My break-in is slightly different from that of Kawasaki. I change the oil as soon as I bring the bike home. Or if I trailer it home, I take it out for a nice little ride without putting any high cylinder loading on the motor for about 20 minutes and then change the oil. The most wear on a 4 cycle engine happens in the first 20 minutes of operation.
Then I ride the bike like it's in break-in for about 100 miles. No lugging the engine, no WOT, just being kind of well, gentle on it. Then I change the oil.
Now I start riding it like I intend to be riding it. Revving it up to about 8000 rpm, sometimes letting the engine slow the bike down. Good for seating the rings. Just don't lug the engine or got wide open throttle for about another 100 miles.
After that, ride it like you stole it!
Hope to see some more pics of your beautiful state!

RE: New girl
Welcome,,, and I agree with most of the riders here. To heck with the break in period in the book.... just ride it like you normaly do and all is well. I have had a blast with this bike and most of the Mods were done by me, and that is saying alot since I have no skills in that area. I know you will have a blast just like we all do.... Do the mods, dont do the mods.... just make it yours and have a blast doing it.... Again welcome....

RE: New girl
I believe the 80 + mpg during the 4000 rpm breakin period. I used to ride a 2001 KLR250, and I broke that bike in as per Kawasakis method-4000 rpm limit for the first 500 miles. It was tough keeping it under 4000-as you said-that was about 35-40 mph. But, during that period, I was easily getting 85-88 mpg.So I believe your mileage very well is accurate. It was nict to know that, if I really tried hard and kept the revs down, I could get that kind of mileage.I put over 10,000 miles on that bike, and commuted into Seattle a lot at 60-65 mph etc. With that kind of use, I was getting mid to high 60's mpg.On my KLR650, I average 56 mpg, but if I baby it,I can get like 61mpg.
