You have three wires coming from the bike I presume.
One is brake
one is taillight
one is ground.
Get a 12v bulb tester and connect the aligator clip to the frame
turn the key on
the first wire that lights up your tester is the tailight
get someone to step on the brake
one of the other two wires will light your testor
that is the brake
my guess is that the black wire on your edge is ground
connect that to the wire that never lit your tester
go from there.

ok, I have the light hooked up properly, but it appears that the brake is on nonstop, also wires hit each other for a moment ,now head light doesnt light and starter has no power, checked the yellow fuse, it is ok, there is a large relay that clicks when i hit the starter button... are there more fuse's ? the manual is not worth a hoot trying to find them... any help will be nice, thanks charles

I will, went to the kaw dealer here, after hearing the relay clicking when i hit the starter. he said the relay is shot.? looks as though there is a 20amp fuse(i found that one) and it is good, and a 10amp fuse i will look for when i get home. can the relays get blown by wires crossing? thanks

If the relay is clicking that usually means that the coil in the relay is pulling the contacts together to make the starter operate. The contacts could be burnt so that they don't complete the circuit. If you have an ohm meter you could test these contacts, but the fact that the coil seems to be pulling in and the starter motor is not cranking points to the contacts in the relay. It is curious that the headlight doesn't work after you shorted the wires. This points to a fuse usually. The easy thing but more expensive thing to do is replace stuff till it works. That is what "mechanics" do nowadays. It is better to trouble shoot with tools and your brains as it makes you more familiar with your bike. You have the thing apart, I think there is a wiring diagram somewhere on the net. I will look to see if I have it and post it for you.
