I finally got the 13 tooth countershaft sprocket today.

One of our very own went to his local shop, picked it up and sent it to me. I couldn't find it anywhere around here. Thank you very much A16tony for going "Above and Beyond" ! ! !

Got it on this morning and took the bike for a quick ride. The difference is quite noticable. When starting from a stop the engine quickly gets into the powerband and the bike seems to move out effortlessly. Got a quick ride in down a dirt road and I no longer have to keep shifting between 1st and 2nd to keep the engine speed and ground speed matched up. 2nd gear is a whole more useful now.

Now, once I improve the range . . . . . I'll have the perfect bike for forest riding!

I had to use an air hammer.

 

Simple . . . .

Put the bike on the lift table, removed the countershaft sprocket cover, grabbed my 1/2 inch drive air-powered impact wrench, set it for "REMOVE WITH VENGEANCE", hit the button and it was off.

Bring your bike by, I'll give you a hand.

 

When I changed mine I just put it in gear and had my wife sit on the bike, put a socket on with a 1/2 inch ratchet and it came off with a little effort. And before we make this a fat post, my wife weighs 115 lbs, so don't even go there. I on the other hand make up the difference at 240, so let the fat jokes fly. LOL So man up and get-r-done.

OK, this is getting silly (no offense, just kinda funny). Just sick a screwdriver wrapped in a towel through the rear sprocket. Take your regular 1/2" rachet drive and have someone hold the bike steady while you kick down on the rachet handle like you were kick startarting the bike.

And please, verify you have COMPLETELY flattened the locking ring using a punch on ALL sides of the nut.

 

I had a hard time too. I had a long screw driver to put threw the rear sprocket and I used an air impact gun and it still was very hard to get off!! So I feel your pain. If you cant get it off you can bring it to the dealer and ask them to loosen the nut for you or have them just change it for you. Good luck! keep us posted..

 

I ordered it today from sprocket specialists,sounds like what i need. Cant wait to try it out. Thanks for all the tips,part numbers etc.that was a 514xk-13 right? and i dont need to replace the chain from what i read here?thanks again!

 

If all you are changing is the front sprocket to a 13 tooth, the stock chain will fit just fine.
