stro - could you tell me about your KTM muffler on the KLX?

A few weeks ago I was looking for a replacement for the stocker and the 2 stockers I considered were the KDX stock muffler and a KTM stocker (400EXC) because they're good right off the showroom floor AND relatively quiet. The 400EXC didn't look like it would fit so I was thinking more about the KDX.

Are you talking about the classic 300EXC hockeystick muffler or a newer one? Muffler only or a full system?

Fitment issues? How much work was required to make it fit?

any pics available?

BTW, congrats on the repack.

ill try get some pics up soon, its a 300 hockey stick. not stock ktm but answer muffler for 300exc, so stock would work also.Problem is its not a bolt on you have to cut off part of the klx pipe and weld it to the ktm muffler (not sure if stock ktm is all aluminum as the answer has a steel insert and I could weld it without a aluminum welder).I just went this way as it was $12.00 on ebay.works good tho and quiet and flows good.

Thanks stro.

I found that all I had to do to make the KDX muffler fit was to weld an extension to the midpipe maybe 1.5" long and even the stock bracket on the muffler would fit up to the subframe. Haven't done it though.

Were you able to use the bracket welded on the muffler?

Sounds OK? The KTM was one I wanted to use originally because they're quiet AND flow well. Hopefully not as loud as some of the aftermarket KLX mufflers.

Fits under the right side plate OK?

Noticeably lighter than stock?

Did the ID of the midpipe fit OK over the KLX headpipe or was that why you had to weld the piece on - to marry nicely with the headpipe diameter?

I think it weighs 1/3 of what the stocker is, used bracket on muffler (1 lines up other needs bracket work), had to weld on extension and klx mid pipe to fit it to header.

What you describe sounds very similar to the DEP muffler I'm running... right down to needing to weld an extra piece of pipe on, to get it to mate to the stock header pipe.

I'd love to see some pictures of it (mounted or not). Here's a picture of mine...
