If you really want to use the KLX for Interstate rides, You probably need a 15T front sprocket and maybe even drop some teeth on the rear. It's just not really a highway machine. Plus a windscreen would be in order. I love my KLX but it is what it is. It's like trying to ride a ZX6R on muddy trails. Sure you could mod it to the hilt and have a decent trail bike but it'll always be a ZX6R.

My a$$ hurts a little bit and then the pain just goes away after a couple of hours of riding but when I stop for fuel I have to be careful not to drop the bike at the pump due to legs being asleep and falling out from under me.

the klx is a bullet proof little engine.
after 10000km and two 1500km road trips.usually trying to keep up to klr650's and dr400's.at 130kmh plus.
with stock gearing I am normally running in the 7500-9000 rpm range with a little 10000rpm thrown in for good luck.
Just had the bike in for a hard starting once warmed up problem. we did a leak down test on it and it was at only 5%.I was amazed because i am not easy on the bike and it still is solid.
as for the starting problem it turned out to be one of the main ground wires was heavily corroded in the threads at the bolt that holds it to the frame.

Thanks for all the replys. Everyday it doesn't rain I put about 40 miles a day round trip to and from work. I also ride it off road often it a great trail bike. I have do hare scrambles on it rather than my YZ450, its just a better trail machine. I love my 06' KLX!!!! The money it saves on gas it pays for itself.

I keep afreshtwin air air filtersoaked with No Toil oiland keep the oil changed with mobile one 10w-40 or 20-50 motorcycle oil.

I feel better hearing the rpms you guys turn. I don't think I have ever turned over 9500. The engine pulls like a turbo diesel. People are always shocked that I can out run them in trailson a street legal 250!

What are you doing 90 mph? I have the 13-45 combo and I'm at 7000 doing 60
I think its around 85 -90 , I think the speedometer is wrong I never look at it, however, I look at the tach often. Im passing cars at a steady pace. I think its safer to pass than to let car pass you or linger around and let them sneak up beside you.

Just wondering what RPMs you guys average. I ride my bike to work a lot and take the interstate most of the way. I usally am in thearound 7k . I actully but an aluminum40 tooth on the back with the stock 14 still on the front so I would keep the motor from working so hard and I still hate thinking about it when I'm running 8500 rpms. It just sounds like its working so hard. I think my mods gave a ton of torque because I always shift around 6k and it drops down to 5k and I just go the the gears really quick. How do you guys ride?
Running Stock I hit 80 MPH @ 7600 RPM and it felt real smooth. With the 40T Rear Sprocket yoyu must be flying at 8500 RPM.

since Iinstalled my new D607's on the bike it's a dream on the road...The rear is a 120/90-18 and it's a little taller than the kenda K760 so the overall gearin would be like running a 14-40 overall.....very pleasant and with my mods she pulls hard....what i still can't believe is that i actually ran this thing to Port jervis,NY. (hawks nest) on the knobby tires for a total of a 331 mile round trip the other month.....I left at 6:30 am and i got back around 9 pm......what a ride...
as for the bar vibration? I ground out the tack welds for the bar weights and i knocked the bar weights down into the curve of the bars.....then i installed the Acerbis enduro guards on the bars with the rubber mounts and the vibes pretty much went away all together.eventually i'll install some pro-taper bars but for now or until i wreck these they'll stay.
