From reading, I see the only difference in a KLX250 and a KLR250 is the KLR is electric start and the KLR is kick start?

Sherpa's i believe were not imported into usa. I don't know the diff.

 

Super Sherpa is an air cooled 250, it used to be available in Canada.
What do you mean with the "KLX" without a number?

 

All KLX250s are very similar, perimeter frame and same engine, cam drive on the right side and most all engine parts similar. The early R models were kick start only, 94-95, evolving into the KLX300R. 2006 KLX250 got the e-start, most everything else very KLX300-like. 2009 got different suspension w/shorter travel and new bodywork. Those are the generalities. The SM models were similar to the S models of the same year, but I think had taller gearing along with the 17s, and maybe shorter suspension travel, but not sure of that. There are probably some differences like damping or spring rates over the years, but in general, very similar over all.

All KLR250s are different engines from the KLX, having cam drive on left side. They used a standard frame versus the perimeter frame, and the forks were standard forks versus the inverted forks. Lesser quality shock and brakes too. Comparing them to the KLX is like comparing the KLX650 to the KLR650, apples to oranges... very VERY few parts interchange and the KLR series was a low performance series in comparison.

Supersherpa was definitely in the US, I think in 2000 for a couple years, I was selling them. Big deal was e-start and very low seat making it extremely user friendly. It had an air cooled engine. Didn't sell particularly well, people didn't want to pay the price for them, I think the KLR and others were lower priced and as is consistent, the riders went for the cheap bike. Same happened with the KLX650, riders went for the lesser performing KLR - then complain about horsepower... shoulda bought the KLX.
