Lid or No Lid - That is the Question!
ORIGINAL: DirtSurfer
Slightly different spin this time Thunderchild, Some are saying that riding with no lid is excessively loud.
Seems that other then Deej, who feels it adds to the muffler sound in a positive way (which is very cool Deej, you'd make a great 2 stroke dirt rider!!) those running with the lid off AND who made the 'WIDGET' Muffler mod seem to be saying its very loud and somewhat anoying.
Interestingly enough, both you and one other person who have the lid off and who currently have the STOCK muffler don't seem to mind the sound.
Is it possible perhaps that the stock muffler some how reduces the intake a bit so it is not sucking as loud????
Thoughts???

Well... Like Kawi Wawi said, it sounds more "clappy" without the lid. I think that the airbox acts like an acoustic resonance chamber which adds to the .db level. No big deal to me since I wear earplugs when I ride anyway. The reason I took mine off was to fine tune the A/F mixture without having to mess with jetting or the needle again. It's pretty much spot on now with the lid off. I don't mind the sound at all.
I had a 1979 TT500 that had just a foam 'sock' that was hose clamped right onto the carb throat. With no airbox around it, it wasn't as noisy as the KLX with the airbox.
My goal is to have the bike run well, the sound is secondary to the performance. (with that being said, I do prefer a quieter bike. My rides take me by livestock sometimes and I don't want to cause problems with the local ranchers, etc.

I REMOVED THE SNORKLE THEN USED HALF BY HALF STICK ON WEATHER STRIPPING AND MAKE A LIP AROUND THE HOLE. IT STOPS THE DIRT THAT ACCUMULATES ON THE LID FROM FALLING IN AND DEFLECTS WATER IN SMALL AMOUNTS. BY REMOVING THE SNORLKLE AND DRILLING THE EXHAUST IT MADE ABOUT A HALF GEAR DIFFERENCE IN WHAT I TAKES TO CLIMB A HILL I USE TO JUDGE THE CHANGES I MAKE. AS FOR NOISE, WHO CARES!
Well, I guess this thread just serves to remind all of us that nobody's eardrum was created quite the same. All of these assessments of the noise, mine included, are about as subjective as it comes. [8D]
me? i personally love when i go by a car/van with the window open, when i am in the fast lane, and then we get to a light and i have to pass them again, i like to see them holding thier ears because the bike is so loud at 8k rpm's
[sm=badbadbad.gif] but thats just me, i like the sound of a loud exhaust, on anything what can i say, v8', v10's, crotch rockets, dirt bikes, quads, anything, and in my opinion, if you dont your not a true gear head...

That sure does sound perfect. Anywhere from about 130 to 135 will dial you in pretty good. That probably is how I'll jet my CVK until I switch to the pumper.

No lid, 132 and 40 jets, and its perfect.

i was messin with my bike one sunday in the backyard... after i first had gotten it... i pulled the seat and airbox lid and fired it up to see what it sounded like and if it made any diff in performance.. i almost **** and quickly shut it off all the while lookin for any guns pokin outta neighbors windows [sm=guilty.gif]
anyways... that was stock exhaust.. when i get the pipe in a month or so itll be sitting till spring as riding time is past now.. but when it rolls out in the spring it'll be minus the airbox lid. i think it may sound louder with a quite exhaust (stock or choked aftermarket pipe) as the box noise will overpower what your hearin from the pipe.. i dont plan on runnin any quiet cores etc so it shouldnt be a prob.
