Clearly riders using a KX500 would see the same lap times as a rider on a 125 or 250. I think I read that in a magazine somewhere so it must mean that lighter bikes with greater HP have no advantage on the race track.

You're lucky you've got alot of open space down there for that type of thing. There is literally no place to ride a 500 anywhere close to where I live. A 500 would land me in the hospital quick. Having one would be a great novelty though.

haha, whatever. go watch them race at Millville, MN. back in the day when there was a 500cc 2-stroke national class, riders such as Jeff Ward and Rick Johnson would battle back and forth on the 500 all day long. and you thought Bubba and RC are/were fast on their 450's in outdoor? well they are/were; but a 500 is a different story.

jayloudeman, I had yz125, yz250 and now 2007 klx250 is my only bike. I spend about $1000 and the bike is great. I ride mostly on a motocross track like you. If you ride just for fun and you don't race you don't need to buy another bike. About two stroke and four stroke they have same power, but four stroke is MUCH easier to ride. Once I tried my friend's kxf250 I sold my yz. klx250 is a great dual sport bike.

 

The thing that makes the KLX perfect for me are the gas mileage, nimble handling, light weight, license plate and long life. If you are riding on tracks or trails, it probably isn't the right bike for you. My 83 kx 125 had 29 horsepower, would wheelie in any gear and weighed almost nothing. On the other hand, the cops would chase me when they saw me on the street, brake pads lasted a month and top ends less than a season. For motocross riding, give me a 2-stroke. For pavement, a crotch rocket, Italian if possible. For loops combining trails, highway, gravel road and backroad only a reliable 4-stroke with good gas mileage and long maintenance intervals will do.
