First post so i hope i am doing correctly. Bike is 2010 and bought last year without much history known but in good shape. Start every week but lately it started to hint that carb might be gummed up. Normally will not start without choke and with chock on it runs about 4k rpm. Went to start last week and after warmup and push choke in it will not idle and takes effort to keep running. Surprised it was so sudden. Not sure how to approach. Maybe pilot jet clogged or just gummed up. Maybe have to pull carb and clean or maybe run some carb cleaner or other cleaner etc. any suggestions of easier approach to try to fix before having to pull carb and clean.

Well problem fixed. I kinda feel like a dummy but lessons learned. Been starting every week since i filled tank for a couple months and apparrently it was out of gas but here is the strange part. I probably ran bike for 20 minutes with choke on and it ran 4k rpm without a burp and then wouldnt hardly run when choke off as described above. For some reason gas must be pulled differently when choke on but when u off choke it acted as described above the same way every time. Never had it just die and not start as i would expect when out of gas. Anyway was ready to load up carb with seafoam and give it a shot and took a look in tank and expected lots of gas but not visible and then all made sense. Put on reserve and ran perfect. Thanks to those who responded. Keep in mind that klr choke is either all on or all off. No in between.

 

I'd suspect that the pilot jet is gummed up.
Because of the very small orifices, it's difficult to get them clear so a replacement pilot jet might be the best option.
Carb removal/overhaul is required.
Plenty of threads on the process.

 

Some have lucked out using Seafoam according to what I've read some places. If there is any flow through the gummed up area the Seafoam may clean it out. Otherwise it is carb off to clean the crud out.
