KLX250S Street-able Dirt Bike... Need Dirt-able Cruiser
#41
I was going to mention the 950 SE, surprised it took so long for it to come up. That is one bad *** bike. It'd be comfortable for longer DS duty, as well.

Yea, he is putting a DS kit on it now... it easy to DS a bike in Ohio.

What I meant was that, even with a DS kit, the 570 is still a full-on dirt bike. Not in the category of "enduro cruiser" that slapdrum is looking for. I wouldn't even mention the 'berg 570 in the same sentence as a BMW G650GS which is high on Slap's list. One is high performance dirt bike, the other is a dirt capable cadillac, but mostly a cadillac (cruiser).
I'd love to try one of the Husaberg 390's. That'd be more where I'd lean if I were buying a new bike today. If money was no object.

Y'know it's funny, if you get old enough you can start to see some odd things happening. I look at the BMW 800 , the Kawasaki Versys and the Benelli Tre that everyone is raving over and I see the Yamaha TDM of what, 20 years ago? Only problem was, no-one wanted them back then. I think they sold in the low hundreds at most in the USA, but what a fantastic and versatile bike it was. Okay, old fart rant mode off.

They literally sold maybe a cupla hundred in the US in the 2 years they were imported, 92 & 93. I remember people finding them still in crates in obscure Yamaha dealerships 10 years later. It was basically a do-anything bike like the V-Strom or the new BMW twins. Put knobbies, engine bars and a higher exhaust on it and you could take it almost anywhere, as I did mine. Get a bigger screen and some Givi bags and you could ride it all day on the interstate, as I did mine. Want to go scratching? Just go ride and throw it around. It was heavy for a DS bike, which was ultimately why I sold mine but when I look at all the big, heavier DS bikes now I just think back to the TDM. Way ahead of it's time. There was a spin-off of the basic design called a TRX that was a super bike, a Japanese Ducati basically. That one sold even less than the TDM and is also a bit of a cult bike nowadays.

Buried somewhere in my soon (ho-ho) to be digitized slide collection are some pictures of mine on trails in Utah and the Rockies. It was a great bike. There is another ex-TDM owner on this forum which is improbable at best. Oh, are you old enough to know what slides are at least?
