Nicely said, I think thats whats nice about all bikes is they fit different bills, for different purposes. Whenbuying be honest with yourself about how your going to use it and buy accordingly.

Finger's is a very low maintenance long haul bike, designed for long distance yet still very off-road capable. Mine is a full on race bike designed to be hammered hard in the woods

Finger's bike on the other hand could serve commuter duty just fine - large oil capacity and infrequent changes and infrequent valve check and adjusts. Some would put it in the same class as the KLR650. I think the 640 ADV is more dirt worthy than the KLR, but maintenance wise, I think they are comparable. I have never ridden either, though, so take that with a grain of salt.
Bro you just put my adv in the same class as a klr....that's just mean...lol.

I mean if you said an xr or sumthin...but a klr.

ktm 640 0.3395 HP/kg
KLR 650 0.2500 HP/kg
BMW G650X 0.3681 HP/kg....oh that's sweet, now I gotta mod my adv
Husqvarna TE610 0.3786 HP/kg....nice but too light for highway speeds, more of a dirtbike.

Edit the new KTM 690 Enduro (2008) 0.4621 HP/kg ....... Ohhh now we are talking an all-purpose commuter.

No insult intended! I wouldn't be so hard on the old KLR. It may not be too pretty, but it'll sure go in right hands. Seen it with my own two eyes. Did you see the guy that ran this past year's Last Man Standing course on one? He didn't race it, but he took it over all the tough parts of the course, post race. I was impressed.

Just havin fun

If I were to do a trip to South America...the klr would be close to the top of the list just due to reliability

Now power to weight ratios and the ADV just puts a sweet grin on my face that makes my cheeks sore..lol

What's up with the 690 reference? Displacement isn't anywhere near 690cc. And when will KTM offer an Adventure model similar to the older 640's?

True it's 654cc with 63 hp stock and weighs 305 lbs ..... lots of links on google to check it out.

No word on an adventure version yet but I did see this modded 690 on the advrider site

Lord knows....I never really got into the ralley conversions.....I mean I'm not going to race across the Sahara desert carrying 20++++ gallons of gas....shoot I only fill up my stock adv tank to the top on rare occasions....well maybe not that rare......but 7+ gallons is a lot. and is heavy....besides it gets close to the mpg that my modded klx does...that's pleanty of range for me.

I'll concede, that's a pretty cool looking bike.
