Klx Vs pated Dirt Bike
How do you think the klx stacks up against a dirt bike converted to street legal use?
I found a 06' klx today for 3400, it has 1100 miles, and I know where a plated xr400 is for 2500. I am not saying I will buy the honda, but it was just a comparison. I know I problaby won't get the overall lifespan of the engine with a dirt bike, but I will shave 20 to 40 pounds.
What do you guys think?

I think that you will find the XR400 has a lifespan equal to or better than any of the streetable bikes in this catagory. If you can, ride them both and make your decision.
Maybe I am just too lazy but if a bike doesn't have an e-start it's not for me. I'll take the KLX. The Honda is a nice ride though. A friend of mine had an older XR 350 and it was a bullet proof bike that was fun to ride. The suspension is a little old school but worked great.
Not sure what year they stopped making the 400 but in 1997 it weighed 257 pounds, not that much weight savings but it does have more torque.

I no where I live in MD it would have to come with an inspection slip because they are very strick on this stuff.... They watch me on my KLX I guess it just looks like it don't belong on the road
Well, I wasn't really going for the honda, I was just using it as an example. I know I am getting away from my kawasaki roots, But I found a yamaha 03' WR450 with 250 miles, and a baja designs kit. Anybody dealt with the install of one of these kits and registering a dirt bike. I wish I could find a used klx300.
Your best bet is to talk to your local dmv and see what kind of process it is to register an offroad bike. Some states are better than others and some are near impossible. If it has already been converted and is currently registered you should not have a problem, but again you should check with the dmv. I would say that 95% of the people on here that own klx's bought them because they could not get an offroad bike registered in there state or it wasn't worth the hassle. +1000 on the e-start, altough a backup kicker would have been nice on our bikes. As far as your first question, the klx in stock form will not stack up to a true offroad bike. It wasn't designed to. If you are willing to put some time and money into the klx it would give most offroad machines a run for there money.
