Default KLX 300 tank?

just a question, it looks like the klx 250 and klx 300 have the same frame so any opinions on whether we would be able to use the 300s tank for our bike? i know plastic tanks are not street legal but im not too worried about the cops getting that technical, ill take ticket if i have to. if i can get another gallon of gas it will be worth it. any input would be greatly appreciated.

This is the IMS 3.2 gallon tank. Basically it requires re-routing the wiring from inside the frame under the tank to the outside around the tank and back up underneath. This requires disconnecting the tail electrical components. Also, need to remove the stock fan - replace with something smaller - see second link above for an idea on that. Also, need to move a few things around up near the radiator since the tank fills in most of that space, name the coil and the relay.

It's really not too big of a job. Probably 8 hours total. Could probably cut that in half the second time around.

I really like this mod - it's the most important one (for me). Hopefully I don't get any hassle getting the bike inspected next fall. Is it really illegal to have a plastic tank on the road?

You could use the KLX 300 tank, but it will cost you more for that tank brand new then the BIG IMS one, definatley go for the IMS one

Some states may hassle you at inspection time on the plastic tank but not Texas. Lots of bikes running around with tags here using aftermarket plastic tanks.

I hope NC is as reasonable as TX. I reckon if they hassle me, I can just pop the stock tank back on there, get it inspected, then pop it back off again. Should be about a 15 or 20 minute job only to swap the tank now.

What is all this about getting the bike inspected?? Who inspects it, when do we get it inpected?? Its not like we take it to the emmissions place and get an inspection done. Maybe I need to look this up in my state, I'm not to sure if we need a street legal bike inspected. The only time I could find the bike needs to be inspected is when we get the motorcycle license and they need to check out the bike. But if you have a license, then when does it get inpected?

Maybe it varies by state, but my inspection sticker is hole-punched month/year just like my car. Mine runs out in November. I doubt that emissions are checked, but I don't know - this is my first street legal bike. They probably just check headlight, tail light, blinkers, horn, collect $30 and let you go on about your way.

Nope, I know of nothing like that here in Georgia, not even for cars.
