Default KLX 250 Starter Motor replacement options?

Hi guys

Quick question, my starter motor has completely gone and needs replacing.
Looking online for a OEM replacement we're taking £400!!!!! does any know if there are any other starter motors that are compatible with the little klx?

Thank you.

Look into having that motor rebuilt. We have a place in town that rebuilds small motors. I had one done for a snowmobile at a fraction of new.

Also, check the idler gear in the starter drive train.
On my '07 it was grinding slowly and working hard.
The bushings on the little idler gear were shot and the end pins of the idler were galled.
Kawi was out of the bushings at the time (fall of '17) so I got some out of oillite.
Got a good used idler off eBay.
Cranks much easier.

I just had my starter motor in a shop. Got it back for cheap, maybe 20 bucks or a little more. Bike started fine once I got it back.
If I have to buy a new one for $400 I might just get the kick start kit instead.

Thanks guys

I've dropped the motor off at a repair centre but it isn't looking too promising so looking for a backup plan.

Does anyone know if the starter motor from a versys is compatible with the KLX?

Comparing the 2 parts they look identical, can anyone confirm this?

KLX: https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/.../starter-motor
Versys: https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/.../starter-motor

It seems that the versys starter motor is more widely available and far cheaper too starting at £20 for a used one.
Would something like this cause any problems if I were to take a gamble and buy one?

Thanks again guys.

If the googleplex is working correctly....you need 21163-1256, which also fits a Super Sherpa. The second part you listed is not the same (21163-0046), it might be the same motor but I bet the housing is not right for the KLX.
Ebay had a bunch (at least in the US) for $50-90.

That was my su****ion too, I'm hoping the motor is the same and possibly using that in my existing klx housing, this is a complete gamble of course on the basis that the klr motor is £20 which I'm willing to sacrifice if it doesn't work.

I'll take a look at the super Sherpa and see if they are available over here, it's just that the klx is not a popular bike here in the UK so options are very limited.

Just a quick update for anyone like myself that had a hard time looking for a replacement or repair on a starter motor the KLR KLZ1000 Versys starter does work on the klx.

As my OEM starter motor was completely shot, I simply transferred the rear most mount and bolted that on to the new motor without any issues.
