Waxface how come you are selling the bike? I'm also from L.I. NY. What part are you from? I already have a KlX 250s But I will keep you in mind If I hear anybody looking for a bike..
Hey frank,, I live in Nassau County and its getting real bad to ride around here... Sometimes I ride at the state park or behind Farmingdale University.. but today bamo another desk ticket for Illegal riding on state Land. I dont know if you have been following what has been going on but if you are from LI it affects you too... Here is the whole deal www.liorv.org This is the real CRIME.
Waxface thanks for that link! I'm going have to get involved in those meetings. The county owns a lot of land here in Suffolk county. They are going have to designate some of it for us to ride on!!!!!... Sorry to hear about the ticket.. I probably have a few tickets coming my way in the future. I just hope they don't impound the bike!
OK, so if I'm reading this correctly based on your link, they are defining ATVs as:
Section 2. Definitions
a) "All Terrain Vehicle" or "ATV" means any self-propelled vehicle which is manufactured for sale for operation primarily on off-highway trails or off-highway competitions and only incidentally operated on public highways providing that such vehicle does not exceed seventy inches in width, or one thousand pounds of dry weight. ATV shall not include agricultural vehicles, nor any vehicles used for law enforcement, fire, emergency, or military purposes.
and defining riding illegally off road as:
IT IS UNLAWFUL TO OPERATE AN ATV OFF A PUBLIC HIGHWAY ON PUBLIC PROPERTY IN SUFFOLK COUNTY. WRITTEN CONSENT OF THE PROPERTY OWNER IS REQUIRED IF AN ATV IS USED ON PRIVATE PROPERTY.
Aren’t there any fire roads in Suffolk County? Is there a hunting season? Do Hunters travel via off highway roads to gain access to the woods with their "licensed, registered, insured vehicles?
The reason I ask, is because in New Jersey, the state forests are legal to ride through (predominately spearheaded by hunters) with any licensed, registered, insured vehicle. We use that position to run our dual sports along the hundreds of miles of fire roads the criss-cross the pine barons.
Today I passed two park rangers and a state trooper on the back roads, waved to both and didn’t even get a second look (I know, I know, I gotta get that original muffler traded out!!)
I would therefore think that any ware that your hunting counterparts can drive their trucks, you should theoretically be able to ride your licensed, registered, insured KLX 250 dual sport.
What am I missing????

Their is no fire roads here on long Island. Every inch of this Island is owned by someone (private, state, county, etc.) Their is only two places to ride legally here and both are motocross tracks. There is a lot of trails here on L.I. but it not legal to ride on any of them!!!
Gotcha, so not even Hunters in licensed vehicles can drive on them unless its private land and they have written permission??
How do the hunters get to the public land they hunt on?
How do the hunters get to the public land they hunt on?
To hunt private land here you must have written permission. The hunters that hunt public land just park their cars on the side of the road and walk in. You can not use ATVs to hunt here on L.I.. Here in L.I. it is very political and what happens is the people don't want to hear the loud dirt bikes and ATVs so they complain to their local police dept. then the police are forced to go and enforce the law no matter how silly it is.

H'mmm, now perhaps folks understand why I don't want a loud exhaust on my motorcycles!
Folks are getting tired of hearing them all the time and are stopping people from riding anything!
Marty you are exactly right!!! Thats why I still have the stock exhaust on. I want an after market exhaust that is Quiet... I narrowed It down to the HFM. or FMF quiet core. If they cant hear you or see you then they have no reason to complain...
