KLX 250 1996 with no spark
I recently bought the bike second hand knowing it had no spark. When i got it home i fiddled with wires and plugs etc and she started. 10 minutes later and when it got up to running temp it stopped (no spark again)
I have checked all the easy stuff and thought you guys could help with some tips to get me back on the dirt.
I am trying to eliminate easy stuff and ask around if there are any inherant faults to look out for before buying coils etc.

hmmm easy stuff first
spark plug
spark plug lead
battery
compression
kill switch
kick stand and clutch cutout switches
tougher stuff
coil
cdi
stator
all I can think of right now
good luck

If he's in the U.S. which I think he is, It's 1996, which means it's the 250R (off road version). It doesn't have a battery and is kick start only.

Yes, more info please. If it still doesn't start after cooling off, put test light to the input of the coil and see if you get power when you kick it over.

RE: KLX 250 1996 with no spark
Easy first ...A common problem is a sticking kill switch or a short in the Kill switch wire. if you look close the wire may be shorting out on the bars, look for worn ,cut or bare wire,if not ,disconnect switch and see if you have spark. Harder......take off magnito cover (some oil will come out ,and look for broken wire,or a break where wire passes through into casing. It should be in a rubber holder thru casing..but some become lost or rot out

Look at the Coil ground, to make sure someone didn't mount it to the coil mount ,because the coil mounts use rubber mounts, for vibration . Make sure it is ground it to unpainted bare steel on frame.Oh and Buy A new plug!

RE: KLX 250 1996 with no spark
Thanks for the replies guys.
I am in New Zealand and yes it is a kick start with no battery.
I does not spark after cooling
I have checked the windings and leads tonight and none down to earth the trigger switch switches when i run a magnet past.
I am on the hunt for a CDI to try.
If I end up buying one does anyone recomend one.

Roscoe you were the closest, congratulations.
Yes the no spark issue was the kill switch shorting on the bars, but wait theres more*&^%$. I disconnected the kill switch and had a weak spark. After 10 minutess riding it died again. I finally traced it to bad wire in the coil windings inside the stator. I had a local expert rewind it for $75 USD and she runs like a dream. You should have seen the frustration when I connected the kill switch after assembling everything and it would not fire. i fixed the switch and she runs very well.
It did cut out and slowely die when powering up a hill the other day so I am checking out this site again for help. I am sure I read about petcock trouble so thats where I will start.
