Question 1999 ZRX no spark...then spark

Hi, I have a ZRX1100(12k miles) that starts most of the time like new. other times..mostly cold, it will not fire at all. I have tested the IGN switch, ign fuse, black box( I have another good one) to no avail. when I run the battery almost down trying to trouble shoot it, ..I put it on the charger and come back in a few hours and it usually starts..weird. I'm thinking pulse coil signal? I've visually examined it..looks good. Any ideas?? tests? I'm a pretty decent mechanic, just don't want to take it to the shop..thanks in advance for pondering on my situation. Jay

Forgot: Also I don't have the manual yet..just ordered it today so I don't have any check specs with the multimeter yet..just tested 12 volts to and from fuse block on ign. circuit from key switch....and tested with new black box..

Welcome How long have you had the bike? Is the battery new or original? Once running is it running smoothly. You also want to join the ZRXOA.org if you have not already.

Thanks for the reply .I bought this bike last year and put a couple hundred miles on it..13k total time...it runs excellent and now handles much better after installing new rubber. The battery, i will change this spring. It's hard to imagine that the battery will cause intermittent no spark..but sometimes the simplest things..I have the workshop manual coming and will do some tests if the problem persists...It is now starting , sparking after a full charge. I wanted to see if this is a common problem to this bike..I don't think so, or I would have heard from others. That's why we ride these universal japanese machines on the open road and not Ducati's..even though I want one for Sundays...thanks again for the reply and invitation. jay

Agree with you; I don't think it's the battery (at least completely.) Check your "cut-off" circuits like your sidestand, bar switches, and your ignition. Sometimes the contacts will crap-up in the ignition. Check your rectifier and alternator output, too.
Any modifications which would cause resistance problems? Any kinked wires? Keep us posted, and welcome to the forums. I like the ZRX's; great bikes!!
