If you look at the shop manual, you only need to remove the right side cover to install the kick start. You may or may not need to replace that gasket, though.

Yes, just the right side cover comes off... You'll probably need one or two gaskets on that side as well.
I don't think it's as complicated as it looks... If you took the side cover off a KLX300, the whole kickstart assembly should slide right out in one big cohesive unit and you could slide it right into the 250. The factory service manual gives a clearer shot of the whole thing.

Too bad our bike wasn't like the Yamaha 225 since all you have to do is take off the clutch cover and install the kick starter. With our bikes you have to completely split the case and add a different shaft and that's way over my head as far as modding goes, and waaaaaaaaay out of my price range to have it done for me.
