Score yourself a factory service manual. I found one on Ebay and paid something like 27 bucks shipped. Even if there aren't any steals on Sleezebay, buy one from Kawasaki. It'll pay for itself the first time you use it vs. going to a wrench/dealer.

I'm planning on checking my valves around 7000 miles even though the book says 7500. When you go to do it (if you do) then just take your time and be very careful. I've never done it before but I'm not afraid.
