Default If my bike drowns in the water...what do I do?

I've had this question in my head for a while now and I was wondering if I cross a river and my bike completely goes underwater, what am I supposed to do to get it running again?

first thing to keep in mind is hit the kill if you think your going under you dont want hydro lock... but after the unfortunate accident has happened id drain the engine oil and mayby flush it once or twice to make sure you got all the water out id pull the plug and crank it over and maby throe a bit of oil in there to encurage any water out id also pull the exhaust and drain that if it went under and make sure your airbox is clean and free of water and drain the carb and even take it apart and clean it... now with all that said i had a 84 honda ct 70 and sunk it never hit the kill or anything then i pushed it home drained the oil pulled the plug and kicked it over a bit and put the plug back in and it fired right up and stull runs to this day... one more thing id also drain the gas tank if you think any water may have gotten in, now i know all i have listed is being a bit parinoid but its better safe then sorry a hundred miles or less down the road when you seize or lap a bearing or even worse

Bobs got it

I've dunked mine a couple times...

But I had to start her after the dunk to get home

First tilt bike every way and get out as much water as you can. Disconnect plug wire and remove plug.....crank engine and blow water out of the cylinder. Now spray a generous amount of wd40 from your field kit into cylinder and crank a few more times...repeat... now put plug back in but do not connect plug wire.

Crank or spin the motor a few times and make sure the header is clear.....connect plug wire and go home.

That is SOP for dunking any outboard.....done that about 30 times...never blew a motor either....klx dunk = 2...one saltwater Above proceedure applied, no problems.

4k miles after last dunk....still thumping along.

Obviously change and flush oil several times afterward when you get home or as soon as possible....I also put some marvel mystery oil into the cylinder and crank the motor a few times......don't know if it helps...but can't hurt.

the first one might just be splashing through puddles for a KLX...but on a sportbike you may as well as be fishing

The best thing to do before a dunk is to kill the engine. It will save a lot of costly repairs. Then after you fish out the dunken bike, drain the air box and pull the spark plug. Give it a few cranks to clear the water out of it. And as soon as you can, change the oil. If the oil is completely filled with water, enjoy the wet walk/push home. Or till you get to a place and change the oil.
