I talked to some one who had the digital instrument panel replaced on his DRZ and it cost him $500.

cruising at 70mph will definitely not be happening with this bike in stock form. stock gearing/power at 70 mph the bike is lost on anything but downhill.... when geared down it will do 70 easy but then the motor is screaming. the only real way to get this bike to "cruise" at 70 is to put a big bore kit in it.

You gotta face the facts. The KLX is not meant for the interstate's. It will cruise nicely up to 55mph, I mostly cruise at 50mph (5,500 rpm). It can do 70-80 mph max under its own power, but any little restriction (wind, grade, drag) and your speed will drop. About 60 mph will be the max before restrictions become too much for the stock little 250.

Doing a pipe system and re-jetting can greatly increase the top end and allow for better top speed. But if you are planning to commute everyday at 55+ mph, I suggest the KLR650 as a more better choice.

Actually you need to define what is highway cruise speed for you in your area.....here in S. Florida the speed limit is 70 mph with four to seven lanes per direction........you better be going 75 mph min on I-95 in the slow lane....75+ constant on a bike to stay out of the way..... Been there done that on the klx and it sux everytime and I'm modded, big bored etc.

Go somewhere else in the country.....speed limit is 60 on a two lane highway with normal drivers......no problem. It depends on what you call a highway.

Stock mine was comfortable at 60 mph, I wouldn't like to do 70 for long. I'd got for asomething like the KLR650 or if you want second hand a KLX650 or XR650

No offense, but you guys are wimps, lol. I'm 6' and 185lbs. I ride mine on I-75 for 45 minutes each way at 70-75mph WOT to get to the local off road riding spot.My engine and gearing is all stock. The revs are at 7700rpm-8000rpm, but the buzz in the bars isn't much (compared to my v-twin cruiser). I do have Renthal fat bars with Fasst (or is it Faast?) anti-vib bar inserts and Death grips. I will run this thing WOT until it blows up, but I'm confident it won't.

Yes, it's a light bike, so you are fighting the wind, but so what? Just deal with it and go. The speedo is off by almost 10% at this speed. My speeds are verified by a GPS. So 70mph is about 77mph indicated. Any speed over that and the front end will start to wobble, even with my motard front fender and WER steering stablizer cranked to the max. The rake is too steep so there's nothing we can do about it. It's needed for good offroad handling. The fastest I've ever had this thing up to is 78mph (85mph indicated), but it took slight down hill and some time to get there. The bike just isn't stable at those speeds.

And no, you won't be passing that many people on the Interstate. The safe thing to do is just stick to the right lane. There's always someone going that speed. But, I did pass numerous 18 wheelers that were going slower than I was last Monday on my last trip.

I've got 4 other bikes ranging from 90cc to 674cc, and I think it is amazing that the KLX250 can ride on the highway all day long around the posted 70mph speed limit. Then go to the local dirt spot and rip it up! It's all because of that 6 speed tranny. I love it.

I get thumbs ups and waves as soon as I pull in because other dirt bikes riders love the idea of riding there instead of trailering.

You're right mrbones I am a wimp.....I-95 scares meon the klx.......I got no acceleration past 80which seems to be the average speed...especially during rush hour.

But I luv taking her down B-Line Highway early Sat mornings wot to get to the north end of lake O for sum riding......and 80+ indicated does not bother me on that road.

Are you on the west coast of Fl......maybe we could hook up a croom someday
