Default heat shield tape on airbox... Y or N ?

As detailed in another thread my Two Brothers exhaust is almost touching the airbox on my 2009 KLX250SF. See pic below.

I'm thinking about putting some heat sheild tape on the airbox where the pipe is located.

Any thoughts on this? Good or bad? I want to protect the airbox from melting due to the exhaust heat and was thinking this might do the trick.

Looking at this: http://www.heatshieldproducts.com/cool_foil_tape.php

Thanks for any info.

No matter what you put on there, the plastic will melt unless you move the pipe some. Bend the foot guard out or cut it off. The pre 09 bikes didnt have that guard, and the exhaust mfgs must not have checked the new models very closely. \Pipe is too close to the airbox.

Ugh. Okay....

But how do you bend the foot guard? I'm a simple man with simple tools in his garage.

I should add that my kids have melted their shoes on my FMF pipe next to the passenger footpeg, on my 07 without the guard.

This bike will probably be long gone before my son would go for a ride (he's 9 months old ) and my wife, well, won't... She prefers the Harley.

So I won't have any passengers but I'd rather not cut off the triangle; I'd rather bend it outwards.

To bend it looks like the best way would be to remove the muffler, put a few layers of duct tape on the frame opposite the guard , put a lever ( big screwdriver , bar, small water pipe, etc something sturdy but not too fat) to the inside of the guard, through the guard to the outside of the frame where you taped it up. You should be able to bend the guard out pretty easily that way.

Thanks Dan.

But what a pain in the a$$.

I am going to first, though, give a call to the good people at Two Brothers tomorrow. See how that goes for me. I've got the pix to email them too.
