I searched and was going to point you to some threads on drilling the enricher jet ( choke jet) but the search function here on KF , and I , dont always get along . Here's one thread

Hate to say it, but they dont make them like they used to. 19 years old tons of miles and my klx still runs like a champ!

I do have a carb upgrade. The stock ones were crap!

Thanks guys for the replies. I'll keep on it till something happens. I am not happy about the hard starting though. as it happened earlier. It has less then 800 miles on the clock. Hope it is not the valves.

At 800 miles it should be due for the valves to be done the first time on the service schedule. It's not unusual for them to bed in quickly at first but then stay pretty constant after that. Better to check the clearances and be sure than risk burnt or broken valves.

Manual calls for valve adjustment/inspection @ 7500 miles and every 7500 miles after.

Most of them right out of the box, "06" and up, are hard to start when cold. I Guarantee that the enricher jet is your problem. Definitely prudent to check the valves and rule that out, but from personal experience and discussions on this board, my money is on the carb.
Dig around on here you will find more info.
It helps to start cranking with the choke button all the way in, and slowly pull it out as you crank it over.

Hard cold starting on the KLX is a well-documented common problem which can be solved in moderate ambient temperatures with an enlarged choke jet. In cooler temperatures, I also utilize an inline primer bulb I fitted. In cold temperatures below say -10C (10F) I have not yet found the cure.

Yep. That's what my manual says. That's why I didn't suspect my valves at first. I removed my carb, cleaned it, drilled the choke jet and still didn't start. That's when I started looking elsewhere, and found the valves to be tight. It does start easily now with the jet drilled and properly adjusted valves.

Ima bout to drill a 3/32 hole on the side of the air box so I can give this bike a shot of ether for winter starts... I do the same thing on my snow throwers in the winter so I can poke the little straw in the carb for those -15F mornings we get once in a while, but then again snow throwers don't have air filters. Thus I'll have to make sure the hole is in such a position that is not spraying the ether directly on the K&N, but instead up on the walls of the breather box were it can evaporate and make magic.
